To promote Italian creativity in an international context, the DGAAP organises and supports Italy’s participation at the Biennale di Venezia, one of the world’s most prestigious cultural events.
For over a century the Biennale has been an innovative stage for the promotion of new artistic trends and a fundamental appointment for the world of culture: some 90 countries presenting the most interesting proposals in the Biennale’s national pavilions, alternating from year to year between art and architecture.
Italy also has its own space, inaugurated (in its current form) in 2009 at the Aresnale: the Padiglione Italia.
The Padiglione Italia is managed by a Commissioner – a role fulfilled by the Director General of the DGAAP – and a Curator, nominated each year by the Minister of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism.
The Biennale di Venezia is one of the entities monitored by the DGAAP.
The role of the Commissioner includes participating in the selection of the Curator of the Padiglione Italia.
Selection is based on the results of an annual invited competition. Participants are asked to produce a curatorial proposal of the theme identified by the Ministry. Particular attention is focused on the presence and role of younger generations.
